Often fertility intervention isn’t successful and you may need time to recover physically and emotionally before thinking about tying over again. After the physical stress of intervention and the build-up of hopes, it can be damaging if your treatment doesn’t work. Almost anyone that has experience in the fertility field agrees that it takes time to recover from failed fertility efforts and it is worth waiting for a few months before trying over again. You may discover that a new treatment method will give you a greater chance of success and that they are other things you can do to improve the situation but speak to your specialist about this first. To help manage with your emotions, it is always a good idea to visit a counselor who is an expert in this area.

Many embryos are lost during pregnancy through miscarriage and this number is almost the same as with natural conception or aided, via fertility intervention. If it wasn’t for the fact that you were having fertility intervention you might just think that you have had a late menstrual cycle and not that you had miscarried. However, it is because you are having fertility intervention that you become more conscious of what is taking place to your body and know straightaway when something is wrong.

At some point you may decide that you no longer wish to try further fertility intervention whether it is after your initial attempt or tenth. The reasons behind this conclusion to cease fertility treatment may be financial or emotional and it might also be because your consultant believes there is little chance of becoming pregnant in the predictable future. Alternatively, you may just feel that enough is enough and you merely want to get on with living your life.

The choice to cease must be yours though, and not taken because there was pressing externally that made you feel that you haven’t tried hard enough or that you have failed. This of course is not of necessity the end of the subject area because other options are still available to you such as fostering or even adoption. The only decision that matters is the one that you ultimately make, suits your conditions and your emotions. Try, if you can, to speak to a counselor or other individuals that have had similar circumstances as they are normally very willing to help you on how you too can move forward. There are organisations which can provide support for individuals who are researching what life without children has to offer.

Whether you hoose to carry on with fertility intervention or not, take your time and don’t let fear make the decisions for you. Also, don’t automatically assume that others will empathise what you’re going through, so if people say or do something insensitive they aren’t necessarily trying to hurt you. Choose a technique for dealing with it, such as silently counting to ten while smiling at them - they’ll get the hint - and in most cases will feel horrified that they’ve hurt you.
